Uddhav Thackeray meets PM Modi in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, his first visit to the national capital after taking over the reins of the state.

The chief minister’s son Aditya Thackeray, who is a minister in his cabinet, also accompanied him.

The Shiv Sena chief will also meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi, veteran BJP leader L K Advani, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The BJP and the Shiv Sena had a bitter fallout post assembly polls in Maharashtra last year over the chief minister’s post. The Sena later aligned with the arch-rivals Congress and the NCP to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi government.

Senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut has played down Mr. Thackeray’s scheduled meeting with PM Modi. “Yes, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will meet PM Modi. This is only a meeting, nothing else should be read into it. Jai Maharashtra,” he tweeted in Marathi.

Barely months after the Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP formed a government in Maharashtra, rifts among the three alliance partners have come on to the surface. Contrary to the NCP and Congress’s stand on the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Population Register, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray earlier this week extended his support to the two exercises.

“The CAA and the NRC (National Register of Citizens) are different and NPR is different. No one has to worry if the CAA gets implemented,” he had said.

‘The NRC (National Register of Citizens) is not there and will not be implemented in the state… The center has not discussed NRC as of now,” he added.

Another point of disagreement in the Maharashtra alliance is the Elgar Parishad case, which has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency. Mr. Pawar has claimed the case was transferred the day state ministers met police officers.

Shortly after Mr. Pawar’s remarks, Mr. Thackeray tweeted that he will ensure a related probe into the Koregaon-Bhima violence is not taken over by the center.

Nationalist Congress chief Sharad Pawar, who had a crucial role in bringing together the Sena and the Congress, said on Tuesday they will discuss the matter with Uddhav Thackeray’s party and bring it on the same page. “We will convince the Sena,” he said.

Chamoli Glacier Burst

Uttarakhand: A glacial burst in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand triggered an avalanche and massive flooding of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers on Sunday morning, forcing the emergency evacuation of thousands from surrounding areas, and damaging houses and the nearby Rishiganga power project.

Disaster response and management teams have been deployed to conduct search-and-rescue and relief operations. Around 100 to 150 people may have been killed, Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Om Prakash told news agency ANI. Authorities fear hundreds more may still be stuck. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Assam to campaign for Assembly polls, tweeted: “India stands with Uttarakhand and the nation prays for everyone’s safety.”

Disaster management teams have been mobilized and hundreds of ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) have been rushed for rescue operations.

SN Pradhan, chief of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), said that teams from the relief force have been moved for search-and-rescue and relief operations in Uttarakhand where a glacial burst has triggered an avalanche. “The glacial burst has taken out a bridge constructed by the Border Road Organisation. Also in the higher reaches, the Rishiganga hydel project also has been damaged,” he said.
