PM Modi indicates extension of lockdown in India beyond May 3

In a discussion over video conferencing with chief ministers, PM Narendra Modi indicated an extension of lockdown due to the COVID-19 coronavirus infection that would remain for a longer time, far off May 3rd as India recorded an increase of 60 deaths in past 24 hours.

This is fourth such interaction by PM Modi with state chief ministers since 22nd March when he first discussed with them on the condition of coronavirus and steps taken.

Schools, Colleges, Shopping malls, Religious places, and public transports are likely to remain barred beyond May 3rd when the ongoing countrywide lockdown due to COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic is slated to an end.

In the meantime, the number of coronavirus cases in India has climbed to 28,380 and the death toll rose to 886, recording an increase of 60 deaths in the past 24 hours.

IS LOCKDOWN GOING TO EXTEND?

On Monday, PM Modi has asked states to try to convert the COVID-19 coronavirus challenge into opportunities through directorial improvements, and form their strategies on easing the lockdown based on ground reality.

He also indicated an extension of lockdown after May 3 due to the COVID-19 coronavirus infection that would remain for a longer time, and people must continue the use of masks and sanitizers for an extended period.

Government will charge Rs 1 Lakh to evacuate Indians abroad

Union civil aviation minister Hardeep Puri said on Tuesday that approximately 15,000 Indians are awaited to be flown back to India in 64 different flights. The government’s mammoth exercise will evacuate Indians stranded abroad due to COVID-19 coronavirus in the first week.

“The passengers will be charged for the flights, as it is a commercial service being carried out under special circumstances”, said Mr. Puri.

As some of the one-way fares range from Rs 15,000 to Rs 16,000 from countries like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha to Kochi and Kerala.

While flights from the United Kingdom to India will cost around Rs 50,000, whereas flights from the United States to India will cost Rs 1,00,000.

“If there were no charge, people wanting to come back would be much higher”, he further added.

According to the plan, the first phase of the evacuation shall commence from May 7 to May 13. It will evacuate stranded Indians from 12 countries that are UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Bangladesh, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, United Kingdom, and the United States.

The government will evacuate around 2,100 citizens from the US and 2,000 from the UAE in the first week of mammoth exercise.

After arriving in India, all the passengers will be screened and placed under a 14 day quarantine period.

According to reports, only Air India flights will operate for the evacuation. These flights will include 40 from the national carrier and 24 from its subsidiary Air India express.
