PUBG Corporation to Take Over PUBG Mobile From Tencent Games in India

Pubg Mobile

PUBG Corporation has decided to no longer authorize the PUBG Mobile franchise to Shenzhen-based Tencent Games in India and take over all its publishing responsibilities within the country, the company said in a statement on Monday. The new move comes in response to the PUBG Mobile ban in the country that was announced last week. Apart from PUBG Mobile, PUBG Mobile Lite and other 116 Chinese-origin apps and games were banned by the government in one take.

Shortly after the ban was imposed by the government last Wednesday, Tencent that is the publisher of PUBG Mobile, said it would engage with Indian authorities to ensure the continued availability of its apps in India. PUBG Corporation, the developer of the battle royale game, however, has now decided to no longer authorize the franchise to Tencent Games in the country.

“Moving forward, PUBG Corporation will take on all publishing responsibilities within the country,” the company said in the statement on its website. “As the company explores ways to provide its own PUBG experience for India in the near future, it is committed to doing so by sustaining a localized and healthy gameplay environment for its fans.”

PUBG Corporation is a subsidiary of South Korean video game company Krafton Game Union. It is already the developer and publisher of PUBG that is meant for PC and console gamers. However, PUBG Mobile and PUBG Mobile Lite were created in a collaboration between PUBG Corporation and Tencent Games.

Aside from getting the PUBG Mobile franchise from Tencent Games in India, PUBG Corporation is exploring ways to engage with the gaming community in the country through various region-based activities, including esports, and community events.

Having said that, the government is yet to provide clarity on whether the latest move by the company would bring any relief to the existing gamers, streamers, and organizations relying on PUBG Mobile in the country.

Indian rival to PUBG Mobile announced, FAU-G game to be released soon

Within two days of the PUBG Mobile app ban in the country, we have witnessed several Indian game developers introduce India’s alternative to PUBG or new battle royale games similar to the banned game. One of the many developers is nCore Games that on Friday announced a new Indian version of PUBG Mobile called FAU-G or Fearless And United: Guards. The game is said to release soon. nCore Games should reveal the release date and other details about the game in the days to come.

Vishal Gondal, CEO of GOQii said via an official tweet that FAU-G is developed in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Atmanirbhar App campaigner. The announcement comes just two days after the government of India banned 118 Chinese apps including PUBG Mobile and PUBG Mobile Lite.

nCore Games is yet to reveal more details about the action game. Talking about the game, Gondal said that FAU-G, as the name suggests, will lesson players about the sacrifices of Indian soldiers. He also said that 20 percent of net revenue will be donated to BharatKeVeer trust.

Several Indian game developers are using the PUBG Mobile ban as an opportunity to bring desi alternatives to the game. Similar happened to TikTok when the short video platform was banned in the country. There are apps like Chingari, Mitron, Roposo, Moj, and many more that have replaced TikTok in the country.

The government of India banned 118 apps on Wednesday including the popular battle royale game PUBG Mobile and also its Lite version. The game has been removed from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Users who have the game downloaded on their phones are still able to play the game.

Netflix is offering a few original shows and movies for free to everyone

Free Netflix Shows

The quests for dominance in the online video streaming industry is shared across different services, each of them battling for your free time and attention, and of course, your wallet. While platforms like YouTube primarily rely on user-submitted content that is broadcasted for free, other platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video aim to be more of a cable-replacement, offering premium-quality content usually behind a subscription paywall.

But not everyone can experience premium paywalled content all the time, which makes it a little challenging to entice potential subscribers to part with their money. One way is to offer lower payment threshold plans to lower the barrier of affordability, and Netflix is building upon it by now offering a few of its original shows and movies for everyone to watch for free, even without needing a Netflix account.

As spotted by OnlyTech, Netflix is now offering non-subscribers the ability to watch Netflix Original series and movies for free without needing to create a Netflix account. The list of content available could possibly vary across regions, but here are the titles available in India:

  • Series:
    • Stranger Things
    • Elite
    • Boss Baby – Back in Business
    • When They See Us
    • Love is Blind
    • Our Planet
    • Grace and Frankie
  • Movies:
    • Murder Mystery
    • Bird Box
    • The Two Popes

All of these titles are available to play with a simple click on desktop and Android browsers. iOS browsers are not supported. Curiously, you can’t watch these for free on the official Netflix app on Android or on Android TV.

What’s the catch, you ask? The only catch that we could spot was the fact that only the first episode is available to watch for free for the listed series.

In a statement to NDTV Gadgets, Netflix offered the following statement:

We’re looking at different marketing promotions to attract new members and give them a great Netflix experience.

There is no indication that this marketing promotion is temporary, but it’s best to make hay while the sun still shines. These movies and shows might not be enough by themselves to convince users to opt for an annual subscription, but they might just be the kickstart needed to get some consumers onto the more basic and monthly subscription plans, just to find out what happens next in the series.
