At least 19 students died in a deadly fire that broke out in a commercial building in Sarthana area of Surat. The students were attending their tuition class when the fire engulfed the area, supposedly due to a short circuit. The coaching center was located on the third and fourth floors of the Taxshila Complex.
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has ordered an investigation into the incident. The chief minister has also declared financial help of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of children who died in this incident, an official statement from CM office said.
An official at the Surat fire control room said
“Around ten students trapped on the third and fourth floors jumped from windows to save themselves from fire and smoke. Many have been rescued and sent to hospital. The operation to douse the fire is on,”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep anguish over the incident and directed authorities to provide all possible help.
